Converting HD File Formats

Hi Maria,

First off, Thank you for assisting us in improving the quality of our videos.  While I consider myself to be ok with technology, I am still a bit clueless with regards to video conversion.  I love getting new gadgets, so with Julianna having this role, I went out and bought a Sony HD Handycam.  The first few uploads had some issues because the format is in m2ts -->  I have no idea what that means, but is that format OK?  I have been uploading 2 versions with each review, the m2ts and then a converted mpeg file.

Regards
Chris

  1. Good Question!!! :) So there are hundreds of types of video files, and some look completely strange. But types of files are like types of brands of lets say shampoo. There are different brands and we all have a favorite but they all do the same thing but just in a slightly different way. Each video camera has its own way of exporting footage so thats when you get all these crazy file types. Canon, Panasonic, JVC, SONY, etc. all use different file types because they want to be different.

I personally convert all files to .mov files because my editing program likes those files. I will not ask to convert files unless I cannot open it on my end. but if you are interested in knowing how to convert files here are some quick links to get you started.

    download handbrake url http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

the pc and mac version are slightly different but both the same things
as you will learn you can do many things with handbrake :)

  2. oh and you only have to upload one type of file. I would stick with the mpeg file version or if you learn how to convert to .mov that would be awesome. But just send one type of video file. :)

  3. Maria - When you convert to different formats, do you loose any qualify from the orginal format?

  4. you always lose bits and pieces when you are converting them but more so when you compress them to make them fit into small spaces/folders thats when we have issues. Usually when they are compressed files that have been opened you will see a lot of pixels and the image is distorted...so thats when i have to go in and do "open heart surgery" and try to fix that most of the time its repairable but there are times where there is nothing I can do to fix the problem.

    2. Your welcome, I'm gonna say try the example with the girl. Its probably gonna look like a mix of both the boy ex. and the girl ex.. as long as we can see her shoulders and she doesn't look like a floating head and just a little head room. see how that works if you have problems email me and we can do skype or facetime.
